The Nitrate Hymnal | Postcard - mimi

Postcards

My grandparents had this cover from the Saturday Evening Post hanging on the wall of their den. It's a Norman Rockwell, and my grandparents swore it depicted them. Just beneath the "Christmas Greetings" banner, you can see a redhead in a white coat kissing a naval officer in a blue uniform. I have to admit, it bears an uncanny resemblance to them as a young couple. They once gave me some plausible corroboration of their whereabouts in December 1944 that included a train station and shore leave. Who knows? In any case, the painting on that cover became part of their story, just as did all their home movies and photographs. Now, only God knows the difference between their pictures and the real story.
